Lanikai Grill Hawaiian BBQ was started in November 2006 by Phil and Jenine Filipe. Although they are both long time residents of Utah, Phil and Jenine originally hail from the South Pacific Island of Tonga. Lanikai is a truly a family affair, with members of the family, including extended family, all lending a hand.

Lanikai's menu specializes in the Hawaiian plate lunch. The Hawaiian plate lunch consists of items influenced by Hawaii's immigrant population, brought to Hawaii as laborers in the 1800's to work in the pineapple fields, as well as Indian laborers brought to Fiji by the British. Thus, the plate lunch items usually reflect the cuisine of Japan, Korea, China and India, fused with traditional Polynesian cuisine.
